The Town of Duck has many charming factors- from the quaint shops, to the running and biking trails to entire shopping centers tucked under old oak trees and peppered with creeks and fountains. There is so much to explore along NC 12 as it runs through the entire town of Duck. However, many visitors may not know that just to the west, a whole new world of exploration has been installed along the sound. From the point where you enter the town of Duck proper, you will find a newly installed boardwalk along the sound that extends almost an entire mile connecting all of your favorite stores, parks and eateries in a scenic byway.
Clearly marked and accessible, the Town Park Boardwalk features areas for scenic overlooks, fishing and crabbing areas, public boat slips and a kayak launch. Halfway along the walk you’ll encounter the Duck Town Park which features the town green, Town Hall, Amphitheater, picnic areas, restrooms and a playground. This is the hub of the town especially in the summers where you will find free concerts, children’s events, tai chi classes, story time, outdoor movies and even music festivals. The weekly Magic Show during the summer is a highlight and a not to miss event! Children and adults alike marvel at not only the show put the picturesque setting tuck under the treetops.
Next time you are driving through Duck, be sure to make a pit stop, exit stage left, and enjoy the stroll along the boardwalk. Not only will you encounter new favorite shops to patronize, you will enjoy the fresh air blowing off the water, the honks of the geese, the sun on your shoulders and the uncrowded bypass that so many miss. Dine at one of the waterfront restaurants and enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets on the Outer Banks.
Local Tip: Have your own sunset dinner by popping into Tommy’s Market on the northern end of town to get an array of prepared foods, cheeses, Charcuterie and a bottle of wine and find a picnic spot along the boardwalk to enjoy a romantic dinner alfresco.
